How much does book formatting cost?

$150 to $250 for a novel on Fiverr, around $800 on Reedsy's marketplace, $0 to $250 for software. The quote prices one version of the book; the revisions are where the costs part.

The Nueel team9 min read

A text-only novel, formatted for print and ebook, costs roughly $150 to $250 on Fiverr, $150 to $460 from a formatting studio that publishes its prices, and around $800 on average through Reedsy’s marketplace, whose own figures put half of interior-design projects between $475 and $1,275. Formatting software costs nothing to $250, once.

Those are the numbers most articles stop at. They compare the first file. But a self-published book is not a file you deliver once: a reader finds typos, the next book comes out and the back pages need to mention it, the price changes, a second edition arrives. The quote you are given covers one version of the book, and the real comparison is what the third and the fifth cost.

What the quotes actually buy

The prices below were read on 8 October 2026. Fiverr prices are what sellers set in their own packages; they are observed listings, not a market survey, and they change weekly.

Who Price as published What it covers
Fiverr, seven formatting gigs $10 to $465 per package Packages covering print and ebook: $80 to $465
Miblart (formatting studio) $64–$300 ebook, $120–$434 print, $150–$460 both Priced by word count; charts $25 each
Ebook Launch From $69 (under 50k words) to $109, one ebook format Non-fiction with images, tables or notes quoted higher
Reedsy marketplace Average about $800; half between $475 and $1,275 Quotes from vetted freelancers, not fixed prices
Vellum $249.99 once ($199.99 ebooks only) Unlimited books; macOS only
Atticus $147 once Unlimited books; any browser
Reedsy Studio, Kindle Create Free Few designs; Kindle Create is built for KDP

Three things hide in the Fiverr column.

The headline price is the smallest package. A gig that shows “From $10” sells, for $10, one format of a short book. Of the seven we read, the cheapest package that covered both a paperback and an ebook was $80, and it stopped at 35,000 words.

Many packages have a word ceiling below a novel. One seller’s three tiers stop at 10,000, 25,000 and 50,000 words; another’s at 12,000, 35,000 and 60,000. Adult fiction usually runs 70,000 to 100,000 words (the ranges by genre are in how long a book should be), so a typical novel is either in the top tier or outside the packages altogether, in a custom quote. The two packages we read that clearly took an 85,000-word novel were $200 (print and ebook, no ceiling stated) and $250 (up to 100,000 words).

Fiverr adds its own fee. The service fee is 5.5% of the order, plus $3.50 on orders under $200, so a $180 package is about $193.40 at checkout.

Reedsy’s figure is higher for a reason. Its marketplace is professional book designers quoting on every kind of book, not packages for a plain novel. Reedsy’s own guide says that a book which is mostly words can be done for free in its app, and that the specialist work is what you hire for.

The quote is for one version of the book

Here is how formatters’ published terms describe changes:

  • Miblart offers unlimited changes until you approve the layout. After that, in its words, “additional fees for changes are applied”. The amount is not published.
  • Kirkus Book Prep publishes its fees: $99 per round of corrections plus $2.50 a line, $3.50 per added sentence, $13 per added paragraph, $60 per added chapter, and a completely revised manuscript is re-typeset at the original price.
  • Fiverr packages state a number of revisions (two, three, four, or unlimited in the gigs we read), and those belong to the order. What a change costs a year later is whatever the seller quotes then, if the seller is still there.

None of that is unreasonable: reopening a project costs a formatter the same setup time for one comma as for forty. At Kirkus’s rates a reader’s email listing eight typos is a $119 round, before you re-upload anything.

The stores themselves no longer charge for the corrected file. KDP lets you replace the manuscript of a live book from the Bookshelf, and says typo fixes do not need a new edition number. IngramSpark removed its revision fees for all books on 1 February 2026. So the only meter left running on a revision is the person who holds the source file.

The series arithmetic

The change that comes back most reliably is the back matter. The “Also by” page and the teaser for the next book live at the end of every volume, and every new release makes the older volumes out of date. The back matter guide calls it the page that decays.

Count it for a five-book series published in paperback and ebook. When book two ships, book one’s back matter changes. When book three ships, books one and two change. By book five:

New release Older books to update Files to regenerate (print + ebook)
Book 2 1 2
Book 3 2 4
Book 4 3 6
Book 5 4 8
Total 10 revisions 20 files

That is ten revision jobs, against five original formatting jobs, before a single reader has reported a typo. If each one goes back to a formatter, the revisions outnumber the books two to one. With software, each is twenty minutes of your evening and an upload. This is the arithmetic that moves series authors to do it themselves, more than the price of book one.

A second edition is a different kind of change. KDP treats a manuscript update that moves the page count by more than 10% as a new edition, published as a new book. With a formatter, that is a new job at close to the original price. With software, it is the same file and a longer evening.

What to ask a formatter before you pay

If you hire, the questions that decide what the next three years cost are these, and the answers belong in writing:

  1. Which files, for which stores? A novel published as a paperback and an ebook needs a print PDF and an EPUB. Ask for both by name. Ask which trim sizes are included (one gig we read includes “1 trim size”) and whether a hardcover is a separate file and a separate fee. If you publish through IngramSpark as well as KDP, ask whether the PDF is prepared for both.
  2. How many rounds before approval? This is the number the packages advertise. It is the least important one, because those are rounds you will use anyway.
  3. What does a change cost after approval? Per round, per line, per hour? Is there a minimum? How long is the turnaround for a one-line fix? The answer turns a $200 quote into a five-year budget.
  4. Do I get the source file, and what opens it? The source file is the working document the PDF and EPUB were exported from. It is what lets another formatter, or you, make a change without starting again. An InDesign file needs an Adobe subscription to open; a Vellum file needs a Mac and a Vellum license. Some Fiverr packages list “Source file” as included; ask which program it is for.
  5. Is there a ceiling? Word count, number of images, tables, footnotes. A price for “a novel” that stops at 50,000 words is a price for a novella.

Whatever you choose, send a manuscript whose chapters and paragraphs carry real Word styles. A formatter reads structure, not appearance, and a clean file means fewer surprises in the proof. Preparing a Word manuscript covers what that involves.

When hiring is the right call

Hire a designer when the book is not mostly running text. A cookbook, an illustrated children’s book, a textbook, a field guide, a business book with forty tables: these need a layout decided page by page, and the top of Reedsy’s range pays for that judgment. A template will put a chart wherever the paragraph happens to fall. A designer moves it, crops it, and rewrites the caption so it fits. If your book has many images or footnotes on most pages, get a quote before deciding the software can do it.

Hiring is also a fair choice for a single book you will publish once and leave alone: a memoir for the family, a company history. The case against hiring rests on revisions, and that book will not have any.

What doing it yourself actually costs

Software trades money for time. The first book takes an afternoon to learn the tool and several evenings to proofread the result page by page, which a formatter would otherwise have done. You also become responsible for decisions you may not know you are making. A page that ends on a single stranded line, or a justified paragraph with rivers of white space, is your fault now (the two most visible are explained in widows and orphans and hyphenation and justification). The better tools make those decisions well by default, and that is most of what separates them. Our comparison of formatting software judges six of them on it.

After the first book, the time cost falls and the money cost stays at zero. A typo fix is a minute. The back-matter update for book five is an evening, for all four older books.

Nueel is one of these tools, and our product, so weigh this as a pitch. It costs $139 once, with no subscription, for as many books as you write. It runs in the browser on any computer, and exports the print PDF and the EPUB, checked against the published requirements of KDP, IngramSpark and the other main stores before the file is written. The

free preview typesets the first chapter of your Word file, without an account, and the file never leaves your browser. Put it next to a formatter’s sample of the same chapter and the comparison makes itself, in whichever direction it goes.

So the useful question is not how much formatting costs. It is how many times you will need the book formatted, because every one of those times is billed to whoever holds the source file. A cookbook formatted once by a designer is money well spent. A five-book series is ten revisions that you will want to make yourself, on the evening book five goes live.

Common questions

How much does it cost to have a book formatted?
For a text-only novel in both print and ebook, the Fiverr packages we read on 8 October 2026 put it at roughly $150 to $250, plus Fiverr's service fee. Dedicated formatting studios publish similar ranges, from about $150 to $460 depending on word count. Reedsy's published average for interior design on its marketplace is about $800, with half of projects between $475 and $1,275. Books with images, tables or footnotes cost more everywhere.
Is Fiverr good for book formatting?
It can be, for a plain novel, if you read the package rather than the headline price. The 'from' price on a gig is usually the smallest tier: one format, a short book. Several packages we read stopped at 50,000 or 60,000 words, below the length of most novels, and the revision counts apply to the order, not to the changes you will want a year later. Ask what the price is for an 85,000-word book in paperback and ebook, and what a correction costs after delivery.
What should I ask a book formatter before hiring?
Five things: which files you get (a print PDF and an EPUB, and for which stores and trim sizes), how many rounds of changes are included before you approve, what a change costs after you approve, whether you get the source file and what program opens it, and whether the price has a word-count or image ceiling. Get the answers in writing before you pay.
Is it cheaper to format a book yourself?
In money, almost always: formatting software costs between nothing and $250 once, and every later change is free. In time, no: you become the typesetter, and the first book takes hours of learning and proofreading. The difference grows with each book and each revision, which is why series authors tend to move to software and authors of one complex book tend to hire.
When is it worth hiring a professional book formatter?
When the book is not mostly running text. Cookbooks, illustrated children's books, textbooks, and nonfiction with many tables, charts or footnotes need layout decisions page by page, and a designer working in InDesign will do better than any template. It is also reasonable for a single book you will publish once and never touch again.
